Flood Update

Updates on the historic flooding come in from numerous sources frequently. Some of this information may be outdated when you read it. This was current information at 6 o’clock Friday morning.

Some good news---finally---in the aftermath of the historic flooding this week---all but one of the state highways in southeastern Wisconsin affected by the flooding are now open to motorists. The remaining closure is on Highway 50---over the Fox River---near the town of New Munster. The closure is anticipated to be in place throughout the weekend---or---until water levels recedes. Alternate routes are posted. Motorists are advised to drive with caution when traveling in impacted areas and are reminded to not drive through standing or flowing water.

In Burlington---the Fox River crested early Thursday morning at its highest historical level of 16.5 feet, and has slowly beginning to recede.  The level of the river is expected to dip below major flood stage of 14.0 feet by mid-morning on Saturday. We Energies is working diligently to restore power to the Burlington area---and they estimate for complete restoration are by midday today. City officials say that the Burlington Bypass is still the best and easiest way to move across the river and through the city. Congressman Paul Ryan and other local and state officials toured the devastated areas yesterday.

In Somers---residents whose homes experienced flood damage will receive some immediate help from the village---which will be performing curbside collection this weekend and later next week of debris from damaged homes.Residents who have items to be removed as a result of flooding can register for the Saturday pickup by giving their name and address from 8 a.m to  4:30 p.m today by calling 859-2822 or by emailing the village public works office at gsmith@somers.org.

Saturday’s curbside collection will occur from noon to 4 p.m.
