Gordon Family Initiative Given a Preliminary Endorsement by County Exec

Kenosha County Executive Jim Kreuser says he’s willing to work with Melvin Gordon and his family as they explore ways to increase housing options for homeless people.

Gordon is a Bradford High School graduate who now plays for the Los Angeles Chargers. He and his family have been working with the Shalom Center on a plan that could include turning unused ocean-going shipping containers into transitional living quarters. It’s been done successfully elsewhere.

Kreuser met this week with members of the family. "I am so impressed and deeply touched by Melvin Gordon not forgetting his roots," Kreuser said afterward.

Kreuser said the county will work with the family and representatives of the Shalom Center, Kenosha's primary shelter for the homeless. "I'm impressed with the project," Kreuser said. "There are a lot of things that still have to come together. There are a lot of moving parts. But I think the Gordon family is well-organized, sincere and motivated."

Kreuser and the others are planning to meet again either next month or in January, as behind-the-scenes work continues.

All seem to agree that there’s a shortage of affordable housing in the area, in particular for people coming out of homeless shelters.
