(WGTD)---Authorities have confirmed that a body pulled this week from Lake Michigan near Carthage College is that of an Indian Trail senior who drowned after jumping off of Kenosha's north pier Sept. 6th.
17 year-old Donovan Anderson was participating in a yearbook photo shoot when strong currents pulled him away from the pier and out of the reach of a couple of students who had tried to save him.
Meanwhile, discussions are swirling in the Municipal Building over how best to prevent future occurences.
WGTD News has learned that seven city council members have signed on to a proposal to make it illegal to swim within 150 ft. of any Lake Michigan pier, jetty or breakwater, or the mouth of the Pike River, scene of numerous other drownings over the years.
Violators could be fined up to $1,000.
The proposal is expected to be considered in the coming days by a couple of city council committees, along with Mayor Antaramian's suggestion that the pier be fenced off.
All of this comes as city officials attempt to work with the Army Corps of Engineers--owners of the north pier--on placing two life rings on the structure.
Posted signs already warn of the dangers of swimming near the pier and the area near where the Pike empties into the lake.
