The Latest for March 25th, Both Locally and Statewide

The number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the state jumped by more than 100 Wednesday to 585. Seven deaths have been reported. In Kenosha County, the number rose from 14 to 19 as a backlog of test results are processed. In Racine County, the number jumped from 6 to 8. Walworth County is reporting 5 cases.

Racine Mayor Mason is requesting that the state legislature reconvene in special session to adopt a measure that would allow municipal clerks to mail a ballot to every registered voter and that the Apr. 7th election be delayed by three or four weeks. In a letter to legislative leaders, Mason notes the contradiction between the election and Gov. Evers' stay-at-home order. The City of Green Bay went to federal court Friday to force the state to cancel in-person voting. The election features a Supreme Court race and hundreds of local races, in addition to the presidential primary.

Racine's municipal bus service is waiving fares and is requiring people to enter and exit each bus from the rear door. It's an effort to protect drivers. In addition, no more than 15 riders will be allowed on a bus at any one time.

The Kenosha Water Utility is assuring residents that water out of the tap is safe to drink. In a news release, the utility notes that both the CDC and EPA have said that COVID-19 has not been detected in public drinking water supplies. Utilities use chlorine as a disinfectant, removing or inactivating pathogens like viruses, including COVID-19.

Kenosha municipal bus service is continuing to operate all routes, but the frequency is being reduced to hourly. In addition, Care-A-Van service is being offered at no charge and reservations in some instances can be made on the same day as the trip.

Voting deadlines: Register online through March 30th. (Extended because of federal court order.) Vote by mail--the deadline for requesting an absentee ballot is Apr. 2. Both maneuvers can be done at https://myvote.wi.gov.
