A Racine City Council member who was hospitalized for a week with COVID was among those alders who spoke in favor of a resolution urging Racine Unified to delay reopening the schools until all teachers get a chance to be vaccinated. Henry Perez said Wednesday night he almost thought he was going to die. Perez is a special education teacher in Racine Unified. "A lot of people in my building right now are just terrified--literally terrified--that the kids are going to be coming back because we don't know what the kids have been doing," he said. The council voted 13 to 2 in favor of the resolution, which is not binding on the school district. Racine Unified is giving students the option of returning to in-person instruction beginning next month.

The Kenosha City Council voted 15 to 1 Wednesday night to launch an internal study of the city’s snow removal policies and equipment needs. The resolution was authored by Alder Dave Bogdala. The impetus for the study came from the major snow storm that hit at the end of January which left many streets with icy ruts. Council members made clear last night that their beef was with policies and procedures--not with the plow operators.

In the wake of this week’s major snow storm, residents are being urged to dig out fire hydrants. Fire departments say when fighting a fire every second counts because a fire doubles in size every 30 seconds.
