(WGTD)---The City of Racine begins some soul-searching Monday when a task force on possible police reforms convenes its first session Monday afternoon.
It’ll be streamed on Mayor Cory Mason’s Facebook page beginning at 1. Then at five p.m., the first in a series of public hearings will be held.
Mason formed the task force in the wake of George Floyd’s death and new nationwide looks at the issues of police brutality and racism.
Speaking on a recently-recorded edition of the WGTD program “Generation Now,” best-selling author Carol Anderson said she’s encouraged by these types of discussions. "What we see today are people really beginning to understand and grapple with....this massive quest to understand how we got here," she said.
Anderson is the author of “White Rage: The Unspoken Truth of Our Racial Divide.” As an Emory University professor in Atlanta, Anderson has dedicated part of her life to studying systemic racism and how many governmental policies--some seemingly benign—promote racism. "All of these policies that look so mundane and bureaucratic, with their sometimes esoteric or dense language...but the very core of those policies is how do we keep black folk in their subordinate place," Anderson said.
Anderson also wrote "One Person; No Vote: How Voter Suppression is Destroying Our Democracy."
