(WGTD)---An 18-year-old Racine man who has had several brushes with the law within the past 15 months was shot and killed by police early Saturday morning. The man has been identified as Tyrese West.
According to a news release, a Mt. Pleasant officer tried to question West who'd been riding a bicycle in the 2500 blk. of Racine Street at 1:35 a.m. Instead of cooperating, the subject fled. "Following a short foot pursuit, the officer observed that the individual was armed," the release says. Less than lethal means that were used to address the threat were unsuccessful, according to the release.
No additional details were provided, other than to say that life-saving measures were rendered at the scene but were unsuccessful.
The release was issued by the Racine Police Dept., one of the agencies that's investigating along with the State Division of Criminal Investigation.
According to online court records, West was placed on probation about a year ago for a misdemeanor theft conviction. At the time, the judge in the case said he'd consider expunging West's record if he avoided additional arrests and got his high school diploma. But two months later, West was charged with resisting arrest and disorderly conduct. Just two weeks after that, West was charged with negligent operation of a motor vehicle, false imprisonment and driving a vehicle without the owner's consent.
Last February, West was sentenced to seven months in jail after his probation in the initial case was revoked.
