(WGTD)---Rescheduled Kenosha Unified proms and graduations that had been expected to happen in July have been canceled altogether, based on the advice of the state and the Kenosha County Health Dept.

"Please know that we truly wanted nothing more than to allow for these milestone events to occur as they have for many years, but we must put the safety and well-being of our students first and foremost," a news release said.

The news triggered a torrent of social media posts from angry and sad students. "Are you serious?," posted Hannah Cortes.

Michelle Gregerson said she didn't understand why the graduation ceremonies couldn't simply be held outside. "Bradford has a lovely stadium that I'm sure you could socially distance the kids through versus cramming them all inside and limit the number of tickets," she wrote.

The district says it plans to hire a firm to coordinate and produce virtual graduation ceremonies that'll all be available online July 25th at 5 p.m.
