Sports Stadium, Baseball and Softball Fields Planned for Racine Park

Racine---Work is expected to begin soon on the second phase of the sports complex that’s being developed at Pritchard Park, already home to the SC Johnson Aquatic Center.

Up next for construction: A state-of-the-art, multi-purpose stadium and several baseball and softball fields along with a concession area and pedestrian plaza.

The cost of the $6 million project is being split by Racine County and Racine Unified, even though the playing fields will be available for use by schools and sports teams from throughout the county.

The collaboration was announced Tuesday night in a news release put out jointly by the county and school district. County Executive Jonathan Delagrave also talked about the project in his annual budget address to the county board.

The fields should be ready for use in time for next year’s fall sports.

The idea of establishing a sports complex came about after a study commissioned by the county found that the county lagged behind other areas when it came to athletic fields.

The aquatic center, made possible by a $6.5 million donation from SC Johnson, opened last summer.

Most of the county’s share of the cost of the stadium and related fields was actually approved by the county board in 2017. The school district’s share will come from a recreational fund that’s designated for community-use only.

The collaboration is subject to both county board and school board approval.
