Kenosha---In a bid to minimize the amount of expensive dredging needed to keep open to navigation Kenosha’s Lake Michigan harbor channel, a pair of city council committees gave tentative approval Monday night to plans to build a three-point-six million dollar extension to the north pier.
The 40-thousand-ton stone edifice would connect the pier with an existing breakwater, blocking sediment that flows from the north from filling the mouth of the channel. The structure, however, would not impede sediment from strong storms that blow in from the southeast, according to a consultant hired by the city. Those storms are much less common, he said.
The cost of the structure would be borne by the city’s capital improvement program.
If the full council goes along with the committee recommendations, then the plan would be further refined. The Army Corps. of Engineers must eventually give its approval.
Alderman Dave Bogdala said he wants to make sure that the jetty, if built, will be cost-effective.
