(WGTD)---With school right around the corner, organizers are getting the word out about various school supply giveaways, health screenings and other pre-semester activities.
In Mt. Pleasant, 500 backpacks filled with school supplies will be given away Tuesday in the parking lot of MH Imaging at 6800 Washington Ave. from 5:30 to 7:30.
The event is being organized as a community service project by Case High School senior Malcolm "Tre" Hatfield. "With the lower-income families, it gets harder for them to afford the whole deal," Hatfield tells WGTD. "Obviously a backpack and all of those supplies isn't a tremendous amount, but any little bit helps for those families that aren't as fortunate as others. So I'm just looking to help in any way that I can."
The $5,000 cost of the supplies is being covered by MH Imaging and by the Trophy Shoppe. Hatfield's parents are affiliated with the businesses.
Meanwhile, Kenosha County Public Health and other partners have announced that they will host a back-to-school health fair for families this Thursday from 3-6 at Brass Community School. The event will include free backpacks and school supplies, and an opportunity to connect with community programs and other resources. A limited number of immunizations will be available for children enrolled in or eligible for Medicaid, those with no insurance and those with insurance that does not cover immunizations.
