Disbanding the Sturtevant Police Dept. is Under Study

Aug. 4, 2025 8:05p

(WGTD)---The Sturtevant Village Board is weighing its options should it decide to disband the village's police department in a cost-cutting move.

WGTD has learned that the board has approached both the Racine County Sheriff's Dept. and the Mt. Pleasant Police Dept. The Mt. Pleasant Village Board had the item up for discussion in closed session last week.

Sturtevant President Stu Ten Cate tells WGTD that the results of the board's investigation will be shared with the public and that a discussion will be held in public. He says the board is taking its time because it wants to provide "accurate and complete" information.

The Sturtevant Police Dept. currently is authorized for a dozen officers and three supervisors, although the chief's position is currently vacant following a retirement.

In a letter addressed to village board members, the Sturtevant Professional Police Association--the union that represents officers--said any decision to disband the police department would result in a loss of local control and diminished service. "This is a decision that cannot be made lightly or quietly," the letter reads.
