(WGTD)---Here’s one political prediction that would seem to be a sure bet: If at least one house of Congress turns blue next month, which seems likely, gridlock with the Republican president is expected to be one result.
That’s one of the views expressed Wednesday by Johnson Financial Wealth Strategy Director Joe Maier. But as far as the markets are concerned, ‘gridlock’ is not necessarily a bad thing. "The market always likes reliability," Maier said. "So when you have gridlock you have reliability. Nothing's going to happen. There is no compromise anymore in Washington."
Maier spoke following a briefing on the economy in advance of the midterms for investors and business owners at the Kenosha Country Club.
Higher interest rates also appear to be in the cards for a while. "I don't know how you would get back to the kind of close to zero interest rate environment we had post 2008," said Johnson’s Chief Investment Officer Dominic Ceci.
On the inflation front, Cici said the latest reading of the Consumer Price Index—coming in Wednesday hotter than expected—is another sign that prices will remain high for the foreseeable future.
