Federal Case Filed by Two Photojournalists in Blake Demonstration Dismissed

(WGTD)---A federal lawsuit that was filed by two photojournalists stemming from the Jacob Blake demonstrations in 2020 has been dismissed.

Freelancers Alyssa Schukar and Scott Olson were injured by projectiles while covering a confrontation between police and protesters at the Kenosha County Courthouse two nights after Blake was shot and wounded.

According to court filings, two members of the Waukesha County Civil Disturbance Unit had been firing sponge grenades at demonstrators from inside a courtroom.

Judge J.P. Stadtmueller granted a summary judgment request, declaring in a 54-page ruling that the plaintiffs couldn’t say for sure that their injuries were due to the rounds that were fired by the two officers.

Perhaps more importantly, Stadtmueller noted that the officers maintained that they were only targeting protesters who were displaying threatening behavior.

Stadtmueller also pointed out that neither photojournalist was wearing visible press credentials, although they were carrying cameras.

The decision has been appealed.
