Gifford Kids Collect the Payoff for Meeting Reading Goals

June 4, 2024 12:10p

(WGTD)---The school year at Gifford in Racine Unified is coming to an end—memorably.

Students in the elementary grades at the K-through-8 on Northwestern Ave. got candy today for meeting reading goals. The noteworthy part is how the sweets were delivered. The school’s mascot climbed aboard a helicopter that took off and dropped bags of candy onto an adjacent field.

The students were turned loose to scoop up as much as they could.

The stunt was the idea of Chris Nowak, the school’s literacy instructional coach.

The cost of the promotion was covered by donations.

Students were grouped by age for three separate drops that occurred between nine and ten this morning.
