(WGTD)---What will it take to increase voter turnout?
Kenosha community organizer Grant Pitts has at least one answer. "The best way to get somebody to vote and to participate...is to engage them in advocacy and social justice work to find their self-interest," Pitts said on WGTD's Civic Affairs. "To build a relationship with people one-on-one and to activate them around their passions. Once you get somebody to show up and volunteer...they really easily understand the gravity of elections."
Pitts is executive director of CUSH—Congregations United to Serve Humanity.
As a student at UW-Parkside, Pitts worked to engage his fellow classmates in the political process as a staffer for the Andrew Goodman Foundation.
While at Parkside, Pitts said it was eye-opening to see the large number of students who felt their vote didn’t matter. Pitts, however, cited several examples where a large turnout by youth did in fact swing the results of an election.
