LGBT Center Still Vague on Closure; More Information Promised

5-29-2025 10:15p

(WGTD)---The LGBT Center of Southeast Wisconsin has issued a follow-up news release to its announcement two weeks ago that it's closing because of a lack of funds. The closure caught employees and supporters off guard and led to many questions.

In the release, the Center's Board of Directors said the decision to cease operations and lay off employees was not made lightly. The release says the Center is working with unspecified local groups to transition services. It promised that more information would be released soon.

One organization that hasn't been consulted is "The People's Center"--a new group that sprung up in the wake of the closure announcement. "The People's Center"--founded by former LGBT Center employees and supporters--has established a website and is planning to host several town hall meetings.

"People's Center" spokesman Kyle Johnson said the LGBT Center release failed to address the questions he and others have. Those questions revolve around the status of the agency's assets and issues of transparency.

Repeated calls by WGTD to Kinzua Le Suer, interim board president, have gone unanswered.
