(WGTD)---A Texas singer/songwriter who landed in Kenosha draws inspiration from his varied life experiences.
Brent Mitchell is a high school dropout, a former hitchhiker, a warehouse supervisor, world traveler, ranch foreman, poet, husband and father--in addition to a guitarist, vocalist and prolific composer.
He also holds college degrees in theology, the pursuit of which were triggered in part by racial hatred he experienced while growing up in northern Texas. "Growing up in the south in the Bible belt with a lot of fundamentalist self-righteousness--nastiness-- that I wanted to counter," he said. "It had hurt me growing up."
Literally.
Mitchell said he was beaten up after his parents befriended a Black family that had just moved in by inviting them over for dinner. That wasn’t all of it. "People were throwing Copperhead snakes into our cars. We'd get in and a big fat snake would be in there. I suffered a lot of violence," Mitchell said.
Mitchell made his comments in recording an upcoming edition of the WGTD program Noteworthy.
Mitchell is married to Carthage College history professor Stephanie Mitchell.
