(WGTD)---America will celebrate it’s 250th birthday next year. And Racine Mayor Cory Mason is ready to party…in an educational, historical and inclusive sort of way to highlight what makes Racine special in the context of American history and American liberties.
At Memorial Hall earlier this month, Mason led a preliminary brainstorming session with representatives of over 50 community groups.
He urged them to consider holding special patriotic-themed events or think about putting a 250th birthday spin on any events that they normally would hold.
"As diverse as our country can be and as divisive as politics can be today, part of what we want to do is celebrate America's 250th birthday and just remind ourselves of how lucky we are to be Americans and the blessings of our liberty," he said.
Mason tells WGTD he’d like to use the semiquincentennial as a way to increase civic engagement and showcase Racine.
Eventually, at a minimum, the city will establish a calendar to highlight all of the special events, Mason said.
