Racine County Board Committee Condemns Waterford Racial Incident Without Mentioning Waterford

June 26, 2024 8:40p

(WGTD)---A Racine County Board committee this week condemned a racist incident that occurred at a track and field competition at Waterford High School last month. But the resolution did so without explicitly mentioning Waterford or the high school.

That’s because District Superintendent Luke Francois said he believed identifying the location in the resolution would give people the wrong impression that Waterford High School students were the primary offending parties.

The Executive Committee vote to approve was six to three. The resolution will be voted on by the full board and its next meeting.

An investigation conducted by the school district in collaboration with Milwaukee Public Schools showed that some Rufus King athletes were on the receiving end of racist remarks, demeaning stereotypes and harmful taunts. The offenders were determined to be individuals from multiple schools and backgrounds, including non-students and adults.

Waterford Superintendent Luke Francois said a number of steps have and will be taken in response, including disciplinary measures, staff training, restorative practices and cultural awareness programming.

While the resolution that was recommended for approval cited the incident, it only goes as far to say that the event occurred in Racine County without specifying where.
