Racine Woman Arrested in Embezzlement Case

Oct. 20, 2025 9:30p

(WGTD)---A bookkeeper for a Kenosha-based property management company has been accused of stealing nearly $600,000 from the firm.

Bond for 45-year-old Sarah Benson was set Monday at $75,000.

The Racine woman is accused of setting up a fictitious vendor. Under the vendor's name, Benson then allegedly billed her employer, Elyon Property Management, for services that were never rendered.  She then 'paid' the company with Elyon checks that were deposited into the fake vendor's account which she controlled.

The owner of Elyon Property Management was tipped off by Benson's own bank that was investigating suspicious transactions.

According to the criminal complaint, the thefts started in May of last year, shortly after she was hired through an accounting firm.

Benson allegedly confessed to the scheme in a recorded conversation with a co-worker. In it, Benson purportedly said she'd be "willing" to do probation but not prison time.
