Somers Duplex Damaged by Fire; No Injuries

May 28, 2025 10p

(WGTD)---A charcoal grill apparently ignited a fire early yesterday that destroyed half of a Somers duplex.

Firefighters were summoned to a duplex located just off of 22nd Ave. on 11th St. just after midnight.

The two occupants of the condo where the fire began were awakened by smoke alarms and an orange glow coming from outside, according to Somers Fire Dept. Deputy Chief Jodin Froeber.

The pair got out safely. The female occupant of the adjoining home was alerted by the first responding firefighters. The woman told WGTD she'd been talking on the phone when somebody started pounding on her door.

Damage to her condo was mostly limited to a wall between the two units.

The owners of the condo where the fire occurred said they had used the grill earlier in the evening.
