(WGTD)---Two people have been arrested in connection with the Sunday night shooting death of Koreem Ozier, a star basketball player from Racine.
Collin Wallace was booked into the Racine County Jail Monday on a charge of 1st Degree Intentional Homicide while Justin Millard is being held on a charge of Harboring/Aiding a Felon. Both are 23.
Ozier was shot in the chest following an altercation that occurred at South Memorial and 12th St. The shooting was not a pre-planned attack, said Deputy Police Chief Jessie Metoyer at a news conference called Tuesday to announce the arrests.
The cases against both men have been sent to the district attorney's office for final charging decisions.
At Tuesday's news conference, Police Chief Alex Ramirez said Wallace was arrested outside of the police station as he arrived to turn himself in. Millard was arrested during a traffic stop.
Wallace has pending charges of operating a firearm while intoxicated and possession of drug paraphernalia.
One of the participants at Tuesday's news conference spoke of the impact Ozier had made on the community. "The outpouring of support has shown that Koreem was well-loved in this city," said Racine County Violence Prevention Manager Maurice Horton. While working at Mitchell Middle School, Horton invited Ozier--a standout Case High School basketball player at the time--to the school to mentor younger students. "He was always lending a helping hand," Horton said.
Ozier played basketball while in college then went overseas to play.
While the investigation into the Ozier murder is far from over, police said they're not seeking any additional suspects. They're asking anyone who was at the scene of the crime to contact police if they haven't done so already.
