Water Main Break Fills the Basement of a Downtown Kenosha Theater

Feb. 13th, 2026 3p

(WGTD)---The Rhode Center for the Arts in downtown Kenosha is recovering from a water main break that flooded its basement.

The rupture wasn’t as bad as the one that occurred a number of years ago that wrecked the building’s boiler and electrical system. But the most recent flood damaged props, ruined a sump pump and will require the services of a specialized plumber.

The primary occupant of the 100 year-old building is the Lakeside Players. Speaking on WGTD's Morning Show Friday, Lakeside Players President Katie Gray explained that the break was discovered when board members convened a meeting in the Rhode on Sunday the 8th. "You could actually hear water pouring in," she said.

The Kenosha Water Utility responded to turn off the street-side shut off valve.

The depth of the water in the basement ranged from a couple of inches to three feet. Most of the water has since been drained out.

Volunteers are being sought for a Wednesday work day to haul out ruined furniture and other props. Monetary contributions are being collected. The good news is Friday night's opening of the latest Lakeside Players production—“The 25th Annual Putnam Spelling Bee”—will go on as planned.
