(WGTD)---Rejecting the advice of its plan commission, the Wind Point Village Board has voted to lease land that's adjacent to the Wind Point Lighthouse to a golf course developer for an expanded parking lot.
The 7-0 vote is expected to green-light the development of a detailed plan for expanding and improving the Shoop Golf Course.
While the project has enthused golfers, others in the village are concerned about the environmental impact, which may include the loss of dozens of trees.
Opponents are expected to gather Saturday afternoon at 1 in the park to draw attention to the potential loss. Poetry, prayers and song are expected to be part of it.
This week's vote by the village board included a request that a walking trail near the lighthouse remain a loop and not be severed.
According to officials, a village ordinance gives the Plan Commission the full authority to accept or reject the plans that are expected to be put forth by the golf course designer. Those plans would also need to be approved by the Racine City Council, as the course itself is owned by the city, even though it's located in the village.
The Plan Commission voted 5-2 last week against the parking lot lease proposal that the village board wound up accepting.
