Beverly Gooden's book is titled "Surviving: Why We Stay and How We Leave Abusive Relationships." In the wake of the scandal involving NFL player Ray Rice after he was caught on video beating up his fiancee, many people began asking (often rather insensitively) how any intelligent and self-respecting person could possibly remain in such a relationship. Beverly Gooden created the hashtag #WhyIStayed and told her own story as a survivor of domestic abuse- and thousands of people responded with their own stories.
