Amazon Fulfillment Center to Occupy Building Under Construction Near the Kenosha Airport

Feb. 7, 2022 9:40p

(WGTD)---The tenant of a million-sq. ft. warehouse that’s under construction near the Kenosha Regional Airport has been identified. And it’s Amazon.

Word came just as the Kenosha City Council prepared to vote Monday night on granting Amazon a conditional use permit.

The city’s Plan Commission approved the permit last month without knowing the identity of the tenant.

Speaking before the council vote, Amazon Economic Development Manager Jason Vangalis said the new building will support Amazon’s same-day delivery service. "When you go into our website, amazon.com, and there's a product that says 'same day' it will be fulfilled at this particular network," Vangalis said. "So it has a smaller subset of products that it carries," he said.

The new building will be home to as many as 400 full and part-time employees. That’s in addition to the more than 3,000 workers that are currently employed at three existing Amazon facilities in Kenosha.

The new building will just about equal the size of Amazon’s fulfillment center, the building that's visible from the interstate. A half-million square foot sortation center is located just east of the fulfillment center. And a home delivery facility is located across the interstate.

The new building—going up east of the Gordon Food Service distribution center—is expected to be operational a year from now.
