Assembly Vote on Foxconn Package Expected Thursday

Madison---A vote on the $3 billion Foxconn incentives package is expected in the Assembly Thursday.

Democrats, including Kenosha’s Tod Ohnstad, are still fighting for changes. "These jobs offer a great opportunity but by the same token we still have concerns that we're trying to work out," Ohnstad told WGTD News Wednesday.

They include environmental issues, giving hiring preferences to Wisconsin workers and protections for the host community if Foxconn ever would abandon the plant.

Ohstad, who sits on the Assembly’s Jobs and Economy Committee, said Republicans on the panel moved too fast earlier this week in summarily dismissing a series of Democratic amendments. "This should not be a slam dunk at this point," he said.

After Thursday's anticipated Assembly action, the bill will move on to the Senate, where it’s expected to be referred to Joint Finance. Another public hearing is expected to be held next week.

Foxconn still hasn't said where it wants to build its proposed plant to manufacturer LCD screens. Sites in both Racine and Kenosha counties are being looked at.
