Fox River Floodwaters to Start Receding Monday

Apr. 19, 2026 9:45p

(WGTD)---The Fox River in western Kenosha County appears to be cresting at about four feet over flood stage.

As it moves through the watershed, rainwater from last week’s storms is expected to keep the river above flood stage for most of the week, even as the river slowly recedes.

The high water prompted the closure of some roads, although Highway 50 remained open.

Leah Rasmussen and her boyfriend live in her hair styling shop at the corner of Highway 50 and W. Her place was surrounded by a couple of feet of water.

This isn’t the first time her property flooded. A flood in 2017 caused serious damage, forcing her to move out for a few months while repairs were made. Rasmussen is frustrated. "I grew up in Kenosha. I've been here for 25 years. I love it out here," she said. "But this scares me. It's only going to get worse with all of the development."

As bad as the situation is near the Fox in Wheatland and Salem Lakes, it was worse years ago, before the county, with the help of state and federal governments, bought and demolished dozens of homes that flooded almost regularly each spring.

Last week’s storms produced a total of nine weak tornadoes in the tri-county area. Four occurred Friday night. Even though all nine were on the low end of the scale, the tornadoes produced property damage that was not insignificant.

No injuries were reported.
