(WGTD)---Anti-immigrant posters have been popping up on utility poles in Kenosha and in northeastern Illinois.
Kenosha parent Angeles Arzate was taking her kids to school the other day when she came across a poster with a green alien figure in the crosshairs of a firearm target with the ‘MAGA’ acronym underneath. "To see something like this in the City of Kenosha--it's really hurtful," she said Wednesday at a news conference at the Kenosha Municipal Building.
The event was organized by Forward Latino. Its national president is Darryl Morin. "Regardless of whom these posters are intended to target, they promote intimidation, discrimination and violence.' he said. "Our community and our nation must reject these messages that dehumanize people and encourage physical violence. We can not allow fear or hatred to become normalized."
Spirit Alive Lutheran Church pastor Wesley Isberner, representing Congregations United to Serve Humanity, said the messages need to be taken seriously. "These anti-immigrant posters are a symptom of a much deeper issue--a rampant hatred of our immigrant and asylum-seeking neighbors has taken root in our country including here in Kenosha and this is dangerous."
Forward Latino’s Morin said Kenosha police and the FBI are investigating. He declined to speculate on who might be responsible.
Anyone who comes across such a poster is asked to call the mayor’s office. They’ll dispatch Public Works to remove it.
Morin said at least 10 posters have been spotted in Kenosha and removed. Others have appeared in Waukegan and North Chicago.
