(WGTD)---A spirited race is underway for the Republican nomination in State Senate District 11, which covers parts of Kenosha, Racine, Walworth and Rock counties.
The candidates in next Tuesday’s primary are former State Representative Ellen Schutt, Walworth County veteran Nick Polce and the chair of the Kenosha County Republican Party Sandy Wiedmeyer.
In recording the WGTD Morning Show, Wiedmeyer said she never expected to get into politics. But that changed when the pandemic hit. "During COVID I got involved and activated like a lot of folks because of the government overreach--schools shutting down, businesses shutting down, churches shutting down...telling us what we could and couldn't do," she said
Wiedmeyer, who grew up on a farm in Tennessee, is currently employed as the operations superintendent at the Rec Plex.
Schutt, the former state representative, decided against a re-election bid as the result of redistricting. She currently helps out on her family farm and is also the executive director of the Wisconsin Future Farmers of America Foundation. "It's really meaningful (work) but when our state Senator Steve Nass decided to retire, I really felt called to get involved again and run for office because every decision that's made in Madison affects our life every single day," she said.
Polce, the third candidate, served for ten years in Army special forces. Polce says his political aspirations are driven by his concern for his nine year-old son. "I want him to grow up in a state he can afford and a country he can afford," he said. "I want him to be able to chase that American dream. It feels like for his generation and the next generation that's starting to slip out of hand."
Polce also serves as a youth athletic coach and has been involved in several businesses.
The winner of the primary will face a Democrat in November.
