Carthage Grant; Foundation Awards; CUSH Vigil; Sex Crime Charges

Carthage College has received a $1.2 million grant to entice students who are interested in teaching math and science to K-12 students. The National Science Foundation grant will be used to partially offset tuition for as many as 26 Carthage students who major in either biology, chemistry, math or physics, and then commit to teaching in a high-need school. The U.S. Dept. of Education reports an acute shortage of high school teachers in math and the sciences throughout Wisconsin and much of the Midwest.

The Kenosha Community Foundation has awarded $56,000 in grants to 14 non-profit service organizations in the county, ranging from the United Way's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program to the Urban Outreach Center. This latest round of grant-making concludes the Foundation's award process for 2017, which saw a total of $107,000 go out the door, an increase of 19 percent from last year. Foundation Executive Director Bob Schneider notes that the sum represents interest earned on the various endowment funds that the Foundation manages.

Congregations United to Serve Humanity--or CUSH--says it'll host the gathering at the park's west entrance Wednesday evening at 7 to promote peace and healing. Participants are asked to bring a candle.

Two men are facing charges in separate cases in Racine County for alleged offenses relating to sex crimes and children.  A 48 year-old man from Monroe, Wisconsin was arrested over the weekend at a fast food restaurant in Waterford. Scott Nesbitt had gone there to meet what he thought was a 15 year-old girl. But the profile he'd been chatting with over the internet had actually been created by a sheriff's deputy. He's being held on a $50,000 cash bond. In the second case, a home on Cambridge Circle in Mt. Pleasant was raided Monday by officers who reportedly left with a computer-full of child pornography. John Maloney is being held in jail. Some 15 years ago Maloney was convicted of a sex crime involving a child.
