(WGTD)---A police perimeter set up near the Carthage College campus having nothing to do with the school itself may have led to twisted communications and a false report of an active shooter on campus.
The perimeter was set up after a passenger fled a traffic stop around 9 a.m. Monday in the area of Birch and 18th--a location far west of campus. Nearly three hours later, the passenger was located in the area and was arrested on warrants, according to a spokesman for the Kenosha County Sheriff's Dept.
Then shortly after noon, a report was received of an active shooter on campus. According to a news release from the police department, officers were directed to a specific building and further provided with a specific room number in which the shooting was purportedly taking place. The 911 call led to a thorough search of the building by officers and deputies and the establishment of a large perimeter near the building. Nothing was found.
The release said officers determined that this was a case of misinformation spread through social media and word of mouth. Officers, it says, are continuing to try to determine the source of the false report.
The sheriff's dept. spokesman speculated that the shooter report may have had its genesis in the earlier incident.
