(WGTD)---A large tract of land in Kenosha off of 52nd St. and 30th Ave. that’s been vacant for decades could fall under the control of the city under a purchase deal.
The “Bonnie Hame” neighborhood sprung up during WW II as temporary housing for workers who were making aircraft engines for fighter planes. The housing remained intact for years after the war ended but was eventually demolished.
Kitty-corner from the auto manufacturing plant, American Motors then used the property for various purposes until it was sold. Most recently, the site was mentioned as a location for senior housing but those plans fell through.
Now the city wants to buy the property for $2.25 million. City Administrator John Morrissey describes it as a “strategic investment,” given the fact that the new Kenosha Innovation Neighborhood is nearby.
Morrissey says acquiring the property gives the city flexibility. The deal will be considered by the city council Wednesday night.
Morrissey said the city plans to use tax incremental financing in the purchase.
