Classroom Cell Phone Debate to Continue in Racine Unified

May 23, 2026 8:45a

(WGTD)---The Racine School Board is continuing to debate how--or if--to make the state's new mandate against student use of cell phones in classrooms stronger.

At a meeting last week, administration laid out some options. They include having students put their phones in a storage shelf each time they walk into a classroom or requiring students to keep them in a specialized personal pouch with a locking device throughout the school day. Each option has its advantages and disadvantages.

School Board member Ally Docksey supports the bell-to-bell approach and thinks the business community would be willing to cover the costs associated with whichever option is chosen.

The discussion is expected to continue at the board's next meeting.
