(WGTD)---A statement issued Tuesday by the Kenosha County Sheriff's Office has thrown some light on an operation in Kenosha last week that was conducted by two federal agencies.
The release said 20 people were arrested in both the City of Kenosha and in Illinois in an investigation related to human trafficking.
The arrests were reportedly made by the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI. ICE reportedly wasn't involved, although the sheriff's office was informed just Tuesday that the suspects who were arrested last week and found to be in the U.S. illegally have already been deported. A number wasn't given.
The release says that while agents from the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security staged last week's operations in the Kenosha Public Safety Building, neither the sheriff's office nor the police department were asked for assistance either in the investigation or in the arrests.
In its statement, the sheriff's office has criticism for those who've spread what it calls "reckless and inaccurate claims" regarding the federal operation, saying the misinformation can jeopardize ongoing investigations and place both the public and officers in harm's way.
