(WGTD)---A man who tried to protect his girlfriend from her ex-boyfriend was stabbed to death overnight. The 36-year-old woman is in critical condition.
The ex-boyfriend--39-year-old Lapiate Boone--was arrested Thursday afternoon.
The incident happened in Boone's North Bay Drive duplex around midnight when the woman, Joy Reid, and her 35-year-old boyfriend, Gene Smith, went to pack up some of the the belongings of the children that Boone shared with Redi. The children--ages 16 and 12--lived with Boone.
According to the criminal complaint, Reid and Smith went inside after determining that Boone wasn't home.
An earlier incident in which Boone stabbed the woman in the back of the leg with a kitchen knife precipitated the decision to remove the children.
Boone returned home while the four were in the home, and that's when the fight moved into high gear.
Smith was stabbed in the chest, thigh and head. Police said he had tried to intervene. He died before rescue arrived at the hospital.
Reid--found in the home's back yard---was stabbed as well and was flown to a Milwaukee hospital.
The children were not hurt.
In a separate Racine case, 18 year-old Deshawn Ellison was charged Wednesday with 1st Degree Intentional Homicide in the death last week of 19 year-old Jose Angel Padilla.
The motive, according to the criminal complaint, may have been retaliation for a robbery.
Padilla was shot as he emerged from a basement after having smoked marijuana with two acquaintances.
One of them—18 year-old Christopher Webster—allegedly was in on the plot and is also facing a murder charge but has yet to appear in court.
The Crimestoppers tip led investigators to Ellison who was arrested at Case High School where he was enrolled.
According to the complaint, Ellison initially denied being in the home where the shooting occurred but later changed his story.
