Updated at 7:50p to include a correction.
The filing deadline for a seat on the Kenosha School Board has been extended because one of the incumbents failed to file the proper paperwork, according to the district.
Board President Tamarra Coleman had originally intended to seek re-election, but a medical issue forced a change in plans, according to a board colleague, Mary Snyder. Coleman failed to file a statement of non-candidacy. She couldn't immediately be reached for comment.
In a situation such as this, state law dictates that the filing deadline must be held open for at least 72 hours to give other candidates a chance to ponder running, according to district spokesperson Tanya Ruder. The new deadline is 5 p.m. Friday.
Three seats are up for grabs in the Apr. 3rd election.
Snyder, a three-term veteran, also decided against seeking re-election, but filed the required paperwork. She told WGTD News her decision was based on a desire to seek more free time.
Mike Falkofske is the only incumbent who's running again.
Three challengers filed prior to the original deadline. They are retired teacher Mary Modder, Kenosha Area Business Alliance President Todd Battle and Tom Duncan, chief operating officer of Froedtert South.
Correction: In an earlier edition of this story, WGTD erroneously quoted Ruder as saying that she expected at least three more candidates to emerge. We should've quoted Ruder as saying that IF three more candidates would emerge then a primary would be required.
