The City of Kenosha's Parks Department is scrambling to fulfill its obligations following a devastating fire early Monday morning.
A blaze that apparently began as the result of some type of electrical malfunction virtually destroyed the contents of half of the department's field office near 39th Ave. and 65th Street. Gone are four trucks, lawn mowers, a variety of hand tools and various supplies, according to Parks Superintendent Jeff Warnock. "The heat was unbelievable," he said. "It melted quite a bit of equipment."
Firefighters--some from neighboring communities--were on the scene for hours. The stubborn fire was rooted in the metal and concrete building's multi-layer roof, and had to be fought with aerial hoses.
A firewall prevented the blaze from spreading to the east half of the building where offices are located.
A dollar damage estimate has yet to be made.
The alarm was called in at about 1:20 a.m.
