Foxconn Picks Wisconsin; Challenges Remain

Foxconn is coming to southeast Wisconsin.

The announcement--made Wednesday afternoon at the White House-- did not include a specific location, even though all eyes are on a tract of land in Mt. Pleasant and Sturtevant that's in the area of highways 11 and H.

Some specifics from Gov. Walker:

*The huge electronics manufacturer plans to invest  $10 billion by 2020 to build a factory complex that eventually would fill 11 Lambeau Fields.

*13,000 jobs would eventually be created with an average wage of $53,000 plus benefits. Another 22,000 jobs would be created indirectly.

*Workers will make state-of-the-art liquid crystal display screens.

*State and local governments will have to provide $3 billion in incentives.

Foxconn CEO Terry Gou, Walker, Vice-President Pence and House Speaker Paul Ryan all took turns speaking before President Trump appeared on the dais and was introduced.

Trump took credit for Foxconn's decision to build its first plant in the U.S., saying it wouldn't have happened if he hadn't been elected president.

Walker said the Foxconn move will have a transformational effect on Wisconsin's economy, dubbing the complex and the anticipated ancillary businesses "Wisconn Valley."

On Thursday, a memorandum of understanding is expected to be signed by Walker and Foxconn representatives at the Milwaukee Art Museum. But it'll be up to the legislature to review and approve details of the incentive package.

Legislators--particularly Democrats--are expected take a close look, with an eye toward making sure tough provisions exist to protect taxpayers should any lapses occur.
