Gateway Technical College Prospects Sign Letters of Intent

It’s decision-making time for many high school seniors as they mull offers from colleges.

At Gateway Technical College Thursday, over three-hundred seniors from some two-dozen schools in the tri-county area signed letters of intent to attend G-T-C this fall.

The signing ceremony, inspired by the college selection announcements of top student athletes, was held in the Conference Center on the Kenosha campus. Similar events were staged on technical college campuses across the country.

Among those students donning Gateway Red Hawk baseball caps was Eric Diaz, a senior at Harborside Academy in Kenosha. "I wasn't really considering going to Gateway Technical College, but after hearing about the possibility of free tuition, I just really couldn't turn that down," he told a reporter.

Diaz says he comes from a large family where finances are tight. He wants to pursue math and engineering degrees, and roll his Gateway credits into programs at a four-year school, eventually gaining a master’s degree.

He’d be the first in his family to earn a college degree of any kind.

Gateway's "Promise" program fills in the tuition gaps after scholarships and other forms of aid leave off.
