Gateway's Horticulture Program and Fab Lab Team Up to Explore Alternate Growing Methods

Apr. 24, 2023 2:45p

(WGTD)---Gateway Technical College’s horticulture program goes well beyond teaching traditional growing methods.

Speaking on the WGTD program Fab Lab at 10, horticulture instructor Ali Schultz said there’s a half-dozen ways that are part of her department’s “Alternative Growing Methods” class.

For instance, one of Gateway’s greenhouses currently houses 50 bales of hay under a new L-E-D lighting system. "We're basically taking sterile straw and decomposing it to a point where there's enough organic matter to support plant growth," she said.

Gateway’s Fab Lab—located at iMET in Sturtevant—gets involved in the Alternative Growing Methods class by helping students design growing rigs.

The Fab Lab at 10 program that featured the course is archived here.
