(WGTD)---While it couldn't be described as a citizen arrest, a gas station clerk in Racine detained a would-be robber by trapping the suspect inside the business by locking the doors.
According to the criminal complaint, 18-year-old Brandan Voigt of Racine walked into the BP on Rapids Drive Wednesday night, demanding cash. Voigt purportedly had a facemask pulled all the way up to his eyes, and had his hand in the waistband of his pants to make it look like he was armed.
The quick-thinking clerk shut a glass safety divider then locked the doors of the store with Voigt still inside and called 911.
The panicked suspect unsuccessfully tried to break the door to get out, then grabbed a drink from a cooler and threw it at the glass. The drink exploded but the door remained closed.
By the time police arrived, Voigt was sitting on the ground near the door.
He purportedly told investigators that the attempted robbery was the result of a dare and that it was nothing but a joke.
Needless to say, police weren't amused.
In court Thursday, bond was set at $7,500 cash.
