Racine---Lolli Haws will serve as Racine Unified superintendent for one more school year. With no discussion Monday night, the school board approved a one-year extension on Haws’ three-year contract. The 6-3 decision comes in the wake of last spring’s election in which voters installed a school board that’s much less favorable to Haws and some of her policies. Haws has hinted that the 2017-2018 school year will be her last in Racine.
Racine---Substitute teachers in Racine Unified will be getting a raise. Based on the administration’s recommendation, the school board voted to increase the daily rates for both short and long term subs, and establish monetary incentives to encourage subs to work more days per week, especially on hard-to-fill Mondays and Fridays. RUSD’s pay rates for substitute teachers have lagged behind neighboring districts, including Kenosha’s.
Kenosha---Aldermen approved a settlement Monday night with a police lieutenant who filed suit in federal court alleging she was passed over for promotion because she is Hispanic. Without comment, the council voted 11 to 5 to approve the deal that excludes a confidentiality clause. However, because Lieutenant Jane Finley has not yet signed off, the terms were not made public.
Finley claims that former Police Chief John Morrissey did not promote any minority officers, including her, passing them over for less experienced white officers. Finley also claimed that Morrissey belittled and yelled at her because of injuries she had suffered, and threatened to fire her if she hired a lawyer.
