Holiday Parades to Kick Off in Both Lake Geneva and Burlington Despite Waukesha Tragedy

Dec. 2, 2021 5:20p

(WGTD)---The organizers of the annual Lake Geneva Electric Holiday Parade considered canceling the event in the wake of the tragic incident at the Waukesha Christmas parade, according to Stephanie Klett, CEO of Lake Geneva's tourism bureau, Visit Lake Geneva.

Klett says parade organizers first met with Lake Geneva police, then asked community members whether the parade, scheduled for Saturday at 5 p.m., should go on. "The answer was yes," she said.

Tighter security measures will be in force, including the placement of additional barricades, Klett said.

Klett said she feels that it's particularly important that the parade take place. "The last couple of years--not just for Wisconsin but for the world--have been tough. And so it's a time to come together...to celebrate and have camaraderie."

Burlington's annual holiday parade will take place Friday evening at 6:30. City officials are expected to lead the parade, collecting donations from spectators for Waukesha parade victims.

Six people were killed and dozens injured when Darrell Brooks drove his SUV through the Waukesha parade.
