Update: According to a report in the Kenosha News, the school has put on hold plans to shut down its public WiFi.
A Kenosha County high school is taking heat for shutting down its public WiFi, forcing students to use their own data plan if they want to tap into the internet from their own mobile devices while at school.
Wilmot Union High School administrator Dan Kopp tells the Kenosha News that it’s a matter of internet safety. Some students, he says, have been using the school’s WiFi to access inappropriate web sites.
He says it became too easy for kids to circumvent the school’s filtering system.
Some students and parents aren’t happy with the move. The paper reports over 700 people have signed a petition.
Kopp says the teaching and learning process at Wilmot High won’t be affected. The school, he says, owns enough machines to cover the computing needs of students.
