Kenosha Council Delays Vote on Feral Cat Proposal

Kenosha---A proposal that would change the way in which the city deals with feral cats has turned into a controversial issue. The city council voted narrowly Monday night to put off the matter for a month.

The measure would authorize the Safe Harbor Humane Society to neuter, vaccinate then release trapped cats after cutting off a tip of an ear for identification purposes.

At the moment, most feral cats that are caught are euthanized. Supporters of the measure say the new plan is a more humane and efficient way of reducing the feral cat population. Ald. Kevin Mathewson says he believes his proposal has strong support. "The public is behind us 100%," he said before the vote to defer.

Ald. Jan Michalski says the plan is wrong-headed. "They don't belong," he said of the wild cats. "They're just like the Asian Carp."

Safe Harbor, however, supports the trap-neuter-release measure, saying it would result in the cash-strapped agency being able to apply for new grants.
