KUSD Musical Theater Program Maintains its Reputation

May 13, 2026 6:30p

(WGTD)---Kenosha Unified's strong musical theater program received another honor this week.

The cast and crew of "Les Miserables"--staged earlier this year--earned a state 'Jerry Award' for Outstanding Musical while three cast members won for "Outstanding Lead Performance."

This marks five years in a row that a production directed by KUSD teacher Kristen Singer has won an Outstanding Musical award. The other productions included Bright Star, Chicago and Curtains.

Speaking recently on WGTD's Education Matters, hosted by Jonathan Shailor, Singer said one of the most rewarding aspects of her job is seeing the growth of students. She relayed a recent conversation. "One of the girls said 'Oh my gosh the growth I saw from last year to this year from that role to this role--the way you're (the student) is singing--the way you're holding yourself.' You can watch the growth and learning. It's pretty cool," she said.
