(WGTD)---The Kenosha School Board gave Superintendent Jeff Weiss a new two-year contract Tuesday night, but the vote was not unanimous.
Two board members--Sabrina Landry and Bob Tierney--dissented.
"I just feel we should have our options a little more open," Landry said. "Maybe another superintendent could do a better job--I'm not sure. But at least we could try to look," she said, complaining specifically about Weiss' handling of district downsizing.
Tierney said his opposition was based on several things, alleging that Weiss should've fired three administrators who eventually retired. He also complained about Weiss' leadership in the area of student discipline and also said Weiss should've been more transparent on contract provisions that gave supervisory, technical and administrative employees better benefits than teachers. The board eventually voted to give the same level of benefits to all employees.
Several board members had high praise for Weiss, including Todd Price. "The rightsizing--as painful as it was--was something that was a can that was kicked down the road by previous superintendents who were--let's be frank--paid very handsomely to leave the district. I'm surprised this superintendent has stayed here this long, frankly."
Weiss's $240,000 annual salary is frozen in the new deal, a reflection of the district's precarious financial position, said board president Carl Bryan. A tuition reimbursement offer and a car allowance were removed from the extension, he said.
Weiss was hired in late 2022.
Price said Weiss was one of two candidates at the time who stood out from the pack.
