With Lake Michigan Sparkling in the Background, Rebuilt Path Officially Opens in Racine

(WGTD)---A favorite route for pedestrians and bicyclists in Racine is back.

A section of the path between the Racine Zoo and Lake Michigan that was washed away by a powerful storm in 2020 has been rebuilt.

City officials celebrated Tuesday with a ribbon-cutting.

The project cost several million dollars and involved more than simply replacing asphalt, according to Mayor Cory Mason. "It wasn't just putting in the bike path--it was reinforcing the bluff and adding additional access to the waterfront," he said.

The project became a top priority of his administration, spurred on by the number of calls and emails his office steadily received about the status of the trail. "Once it was gone people realized how much they used it," Mason said.

A resident of the area who uses the path on a regular basis said she’s pleased with how it turned out.

The 1,000-ft. section of path that was rebuilt offers panoramic views of the lake and the city's beaches and harbor, and connects to miles of trails to the north and south.
